Marion Nestle recently posted a blog that cited an academic paper from the Milbank Quarterly (one of the top-ranked journals in the world looking at issues of health policy) that compared food to tobacco. The original paper, authored by Kenneth Warner, one of the leading scholars and voices on tobacco control, makes an interesting case for why food is the new tobacco.

Tobacco control -- an area I'm quite familiar with -- has been a leader in exploring health promotion from multiple angles. They learned very quickly that the problem of tobacco-related deaths is not just one of smokers and non-smokers, but of society. It is an individual issue, an organizational, community and systems-level issue, where each environment plays a role in either supporting positive change or promoting harm. There are a lot of lessons from tobacco that can apply to food. While some argue that the link is misleading, I believe it is useful -- if not always a perfect comparison.

I'd welcome thoughts from the readers of this blog -- both within the Food4Health team, but also our guests.
