Happy Teen, Healthy Teen?
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

An interesting study was released this past week looking at the relationship between happiness and health in teens. Not surprisingly, those who are happier, are much less at risk for complications due to diabetes.

The study, originally published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that:

"Not only do teens with type 1 diabetes have the normal adolescent concerns of school, work and social activities, but they are responsible for taking insulin, monitoring blood glucose (blood sugar) levels and keeping doctor visits, too. Now, a new study suggests that feelings such as anger or sadness could interfere with teens’ diabetes management."

The lesson: don't worry, be happy (?)

Well, not quite. Happiness isn't that easy, but there clearly is a link between the opposite of happiness -- anger and sadness -- and illness. People often get angry and sad because they don't have control, respect, influence or the ability to manage their own lives. Thus, the route to better health seems to be creating the conditions to empower young people so that they feel much more in charge of their lives. Seems to make sense to me, and fits well with the literature on what we know contributes to personal health and wellbeing.
